چکیده

The redox chemistry of Fe in fog and cloudwater has been investigated at coastal and inland locations in the Los Angeles basin, in Bakersfield California, and in Delaware Bay. Samples were collected and analyzed for Fe (Fe(II), Fe(III), total Fe), sulfur (S(IV), S(VI)), organic ligands (formate, acetate, oxalate), total organic carbon (TOC), pH, major cations (sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, ammonium), chloride, sulfate, nitrate, peroxides, and aldehydes (HCHO); the amount of sunlight was also measured. The ratio Fe(II)/Fe(total) varied between 0.02 and 0.55. The concentration of Fe(II) varied between 0.1 and 5 micromole, and the concentration of total Fe varied between 2 and 27 micromole. The atmospheric redox cycle of Fe involves both dissolved and aerosol surface species and appears to be related to the presence of organic compounds which act as electron donors for the reduction of Fe(III). Fe(III) reduction is enhanced by light but significant Fe(II) levels were observed in the dark. We suggest hat reduction of Fe(II!) species by organic elecU'on donors may be an important pathway that affects the speciation of Fe in both urban and rural atanospheres. It is possible that reactions involving Fe and organic compounds might be an important source of carboxylic acids in the troposphere.

Fog Detection with Terra-modis and Msg-seviri

A method is proposed to discriminate bewteen ground and uplifted fog by means of TERRA-MODIS data. First results of the MODIS fog/low stratus detection scheme are presented. The method is based on radiative transfer calculations which provide minimum and maximum fog albedo for 7 spectral bands. Threshold functions which are dependent on the solar zenith angle are used for 7 initial tests. The m...

Observational & Modeling Studies in Support of the Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment

Our long-term goal is unchanged from last year. It is to learn how to predict the cloudiness, entrainment rate, and turbulent fluxes in the marine boundary layer under any and all large-scale conditions. In particular the effects of varying sea surface temperature, varying inversion strength, and varying mean winds must be included. The cloudiness types encompassed include fog, stratus, stratoc...

P10.6 Characterizing Fog Occurrences in the Northeastern United States Using Historical Data

Advances in the understanding of the physics of fog have been made through numerous field experiments and modeling studies. Nevertheless a complete understanding of the processes and interactions influencing its life cycle remain elusive. This is particularly true for fog and other boundary layer clouds occurring in areas characterized by a complex landscape. One such region is the New York met...

Cloud shading and fog drip influence the metabolism of a coastal pine ecosystem.

Assessing the ecological importance of clouds has substantial implications for our basic understanding of ecosystems and for predicting how they will respond to a changing climate. This study was conducted in a coastal Bishop pine forest ecosystem that experiences regular cycles of stratus cloud cover and inundation in summer. Our objective was to understand how these clouds impact ecosystem me...

Gold, Silver and Iron in Iron Oxy-hydroxide Precipitate Formed in Process of Acid Mine Drainage

Oxidation of sulfide-containing ores is the main cause of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), which is an environmental problem associated with both the abandoned and active mines. Iron-bearing sulfide minerals can be oxidized and form mine waters with high sulfate content, low pH, high electrical conductivity, high redox potential, and high concentrations of iron, aluminum, and other heavy metals. In th...
